NUCA aims to bring together climate active individuals and organisations to create a network of neighbours and groups doing good things for their communities and environment. Here are some of the organisations and community groups we collaborate with in our fight for climate justice.

City of Darebin - sustainable living
City of Darebin information on sustainable living – including Darebin Nature Trust, sustainable food, community gardens, buying green and environmental resources for schools.
Zero Carbon Merri-bek
Zero Carbon Merri-bek was co-created by the Merri-bek City Council and the Merri-bek community. Their Zero Carbon Merri-bek Framework 2040 and Action Plan aims to engage all members of the Merri-bek community including residents, businesses, schools, local community groups, as well as Council itself, to take action to transition our community to zero carbon by 2040.
City of Yarra - sustainability initiatives
The City of Yarra’s committment to sustainability – including information on their Climate Emergency Plan, track record in cutting carbon emissions, partners and alliances.

Upfield Urban Forest
Over the past 25 years, local community has been transforming the Upfield Shared Path along the Upfield train line into a verdant stretch of garden and habitat: the Upfield Urban Forest. The purpose is to create and sustain shady forest along the line and bike paths and around the stations, improving the wildlife corridor, increasing tree canopy shade, supporting community energy for projects that work directly on climate mitigation ad revegetation and drawing carbon into the soils, while providing wildlife habitat and supplementing local food production.
Newlands Friends of the Forest
NFF is for people in Melbourne’s North who want to be active in protecting our native forests in the Central Highlands and East Gippsland. We are here to promote and organise events and activities that peacefully help preserve these forests.
Friends of Merri Creek
Friends of Merri Creek is a volunteer community group that has played an active and passionate role since 1988 in helping rehabilitate the Creek from a weed-infested drain to bushland haven. They also help to educate the community on the local biodiversity amongst.
Friends of Edgars Creek
An active community group established in 2007 to restore and protect Edgars Creek. Thanks to them, the Edgars Creek corridor has gone from what was a somewhat neglected landscape to a thriving habitat corridor which is and will be enjoyed by many generations to come.
Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) Community Group at Ceres
ACF Community CERES is part of a network of independently organised, volunteer-run groups in the ACF community – groups of determined people standing up for our reefs, rivers, forests and wildlife.
Food security
Growing Farmers
A Merri-bek based not-for-profit which aims to build regenerative farming capacity in urban communities, leading a cultural shift toward community-led, local, low or no carbon food systems, which build resilient, connected communities and work in harmony with earth. Aspiring farmers are matched to urban land, farming and business mentoring, networks and a learning community, in order to become fully fledged and competent to start their own enterprises.
Fawkner Food Bowls
A gathering space and food growing hub in Fawkner where locals can connect, learn and socialise.
Climate action
Climate Action Merri-bek (CAM)
Independent of all political parties, CAM lobbies all levels of government for strong climate action, runs community forums and candidates’ meetings and helps organise Merri-bek-based climate actions, as well as writing submissions for reviews and a popular, informative blog.
Darebin Climate Action Now (DCAN)
Darebin Climate Action Now is an independent, non-party-politically aligned group of local citizens of all ages – campaigning for a safe climate future. We campaign actively in Alphington, Fairfield, Northcote, Preston, Reservoir and Thornbury.
Newlands Parents for Climate Action (NP4CA)
A small group of concerned local parents around Newlands, looking for ways to be more effective climate activists together, participating in the Global Climate Strikes, Solar Our Schools, and finding creative, colourful, kid-friendly ways to speak up in public spaces.

XR Merri-bek
A local group in the Merri-bek council area of Extinction Rebellion, a global movement which uses nonviolent civil disobedience to demand political change regarding the climate crisis.
XR Darebin
A local group in the Darebin council area of Extinction Rebellion, a global movement which uses nonviolent civil disobedience to demand political change regarding the climate crisis.
XR Families
A group of families based in Melbourne and regional Victoria, who support Extinction Rebellion – a global movement demanding governments act to address the climate crisis.
Stop Adani Merri-bek
A group of Merri-bek citizens concerned about the development of the Adani Carmichael mine – they run and contribute to both local campaigns and national awareness raising campaigns.
Yarra Climate Action Now – YCAN
An independent community group based in the inner Melbourne suburbs of the City of Yarra, YCAN is made up of people who want to see much stronger action on climate change. They lobby local, state and federal government aiming to strengthen and support commitments to environmentally sustainable plans. They advocate for constructive practical action to reduce carbon emissions, increase active transport, decrease the number of cars on the road, and work towards 100% renewable energy neighbourhoods.
Building community resilience, food security & sustainability
Transition Darebin
Transition Darebin is part of the worldwide Transition Network which sees the need to adapt to diminishing resources and a rapidly changing global climate. Recognising that many people want to work towards improving the situation, engaging on terms that value courageous thinking and community endeavour, a culture of creative purpose has emerged. Transition Darebin works towards cultivating a relocalised and resilient Darebin which proves livable for current and future generations. It works this way knowing that other groups are working on the same basis and to the same end.
Newlands & East Coburg Neighbourhood Houses
These two awesome community hubs deliver bold initiatives to connect community members and advance social justice and sustainability.

CERES
Doing it all and helping us all to fall in love with our planet earth again and working in all spaces, is our beloved CERES.
Other
Brunswick Uniting Church
In 2019, Brunswick Uniting Church adopted a resolution declaring a “Climate Crisis”, building on their longstanding commitment to environmental action. They have partnered with the Australian Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC).

One of Australia’s leading environment organisations, Environment Victoria is an independent, not for profit with 40 grassroots member groups and 100,000 individual supporters, all working to look after Victoria for our children, and their children.
Friends of the Earth (FoE)
Friends of the Earth Australia is a federation of autonomous local and affiliate groups who are working towards an environmentally sustainable and socially equitable future. It is a member of Friends of the Earth International, the world’s largest grassroots environmental network, which campaigns on today’s most urgent environmental and social issues.
