Location: Merri Park, Northcote and in particular the Merri Park wetland Commitment level: One-off/Ongoing In person or online? It depends!

Friends of Merri Park is a subgroup of Friends of Merri Creek. With a hands-on approach, we like helping people to connect to nature and to other people in the community. Led by three female volunteers from three different generations who organise and convene working bees, and do the planning and administration, all are welcome to join us to improve the biodiversity and drawdown capacity of Merri Park, Northcote, with a special focus on the wetland in the flood-retarding basin behind Sumner Avenue.

We follow the lead of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung elders in the ecological restoration of our part of the Merri linear parklands. Reversing land degradation and maintaining the health of wetlands are powerful steps in our mission to promote biodiversity and restore the climate.

We have many special interests…

  • We collect litter alongside the creek, walking paths and inside the wetland.
  • We plant indigenous grasses, shrubs and trees, supported by grant funding.
  • We hand-weed to maintain the indigenous plantings.
  • We learn and share knowledge about indigenous plants, weeds and local fauna.
  • We also take time to debrief and socialise during our working bees over a cup of tea or coffee!

Join us for…

working bees as regulars or one-off volunteers. We have a variety of hand-weeding and rubbish pick up tasks. We’re also interested in hearing from people who want to help with organising events whether it’s on the day or behind the scenes. Some help with social media would be great too!

We’ll dig you if you’re…

willing to try, willing to learn and willing to share what you know with others. No specific skills or experience are needed!

Why are we looking for matches?

Caring for country is a continuous task. There is always rubbish to collect, weeds to control and plants/habitat to care for! More volunteers means more care over a wider area, more often.

We meet up at…

our working bees, which are typically held the first weekend of the month (Saturday or Sunday morning), but we try to run some weekday evening events during daylight saving time.

Our golden rule…

If we as a group follow First Nations ecological wisdom in caring for Country, then that Country will look after us.
