AoC is the climate justice collective of Friends of the Earth Melbourne. We are a grassroots group of activists organising for environmental and social justice with a state-based climate focus. Our current campaigns support climate-impacted communities towards climate adaptation solutions in Victoria.

We are a nimble and adaptable grassroots collective that can respond to needs and gaps in environmental campaigning in Victoria, while always moving toward its long term goals. We work together with communities facing urban and regional climate impacts, unions, and other stakeholders to build climate resilience. The movement is community-led, pushing for stronger climate action from the government and taking initiative to create the conditions needed to withstand the crisis.

We are committed to taking solidarity action with aligned climate justice collectives and amplifying the work of allies. We believe that environmental and social justice are inextricably linked, and actively support those on the frontlines of both social and climate justice struggles.

We work from a climate justice perspective and understand that long lasting system change requires challenging the dominant interlinked and mutually reinforcing systems of oppression that we live in and under. We seek justice and liberation from all oppressive systems that devalue and exploit people and the environment, including patriarchy, colonialism, class oppression, capitalism, racism, ableism and heteronormativity.

A date with us could look like…

  • Educational activities, such as community events and outreach stalls, creative resistance and actions.
  • Social and legislative advocacy through research, policy submissions, press releases, letters, petitions, meetings with MPs, forums and more!
  • Alliance building across the movement.

We like role-play!

That is, we have four volunteer types who perform certain tasks and have certain interests (you might find you’re suited to more than one).

  • Kangaroo: who likes getting things done. More action, less talk!
  • Wombat: all about the detail and loves burrowing into information and data.
  • Dolphin: loves people and making sure we all get along.
  • Eagle: takes a big world view and loves strategic planning.

We meet up on…

Tuesday nights in person and online, but you don’t need to attend all or any of these. If you come in person, we often share dinner!

Our love language is…

consensus decision-making. At Friends of the Earth, we don’t have bosses! This means that when you come and volunteer with us, you won’t be told what to do, but be invited to shape out tasks and projects as part of a small group of people just like you.

We want someone who is…

collaborative, recognises the intersection of environmental and social justice, and is passionate about liberation for all. We welcome all skills and levels of experience. We value all forms of labour, so no matter what you can contribute: research policy, write poetry, paint banners, fundraise, strategise, plan actions, cook food… we welcome your participation. We also actively work to upskill others in the collective to enable the sharing of knowledge and roles.
